Os Saigon Blue Rain formaram-se em setembro de 2012 por Ophelia Lecomte (voz) e Franck Pelliccioli (guitarra), tendo lançado o seu EP de estreia, homónimo, em 2013. Entre 2014 e 2016 a banda lançou dois álbuns que os projetaram a atuar em alguns destivais de renome como o Wave Gotik Treffen ou o NCN Festival. Através da combinação de sons ondulados que fazem lembrar a new-wave clássica e os sons etéreos, esta dupla francesa derrete a sua sonoridade em influências do shoegaze e dream pop para formar uma imagem sonora, que pode agora ser escutada através do seu terceiro e mais recente álbum, Pink Obsession.
Para a edição de junho do 7 ao mês convidámos Franck Pelliccioli, o guitarrista dos Saigon Blue Rain (SBR) a selecionar sete nomes/músicas/discos que de alguma forma o influenciaram como músico nos SBR. As suas escolhas e justificativas de seleção revelam um pouco mais sobre a identidade dos SBR, apresentando ainda uma viagem aos mais diversos subgéneros. Disfrutem de lê-las e ouvi-las abaixo.
“As influências musicais não são sempre aquelas em que tu pensas de forma consciente. Eu creio que a maioria delas é inconsciente. De qualquer modo, aqui ficam alguns artistas que eu acho que têm alguma influência nos SBR“.

HTRK – BENDIN (2011)
Eu costumava ouvir muito esta banda australiana quando começamos os SBR. Gostei da atmosfera fria e claustrofóbica que eles conseguem criar. Essa música consiste em apenas uma parte e o loop evolui com apenas pequenas variações. Esta música é muito hipnótica, poderia continuar assim para sempre.
HTRK – RENTBOY (2009)
A mesma banda, mas com uma faixa do álbum anterior, antes do ex-baixista deles morrer. Este álbum é co-produzido por Rowland S. Howard (The Birthday Party, Crime e The City Solution…). Ele toca em várias músicas, mas não nesta. Ao contrário de Bendin, esta é uma música de guitarra, reminiscente dos Crime and the City Solution. Exceto a voz, tudo aqui é uma grande influência para as primeiras coisas que produzimos como SBR.
CRIME AND THE CITY SOLUTION – SIX BELLS CHIME (1986)
Outra banda australiana. Eu descobri esta música no filme Wings of Desire, de Wim Wenders. A música foi composta por Rowland S. Howard. A sua maneira de tocar também é uma grande influência. Podem ouvir este tipo de guitarra lânguida em várias músicas dos SBR.
AND ALSO THE TREES – DIALOGUE (1993)
A Ophelia e eu somos grandes fãs. Nós amamos o universo musical deles, especialmente as guitarras cristalinas do Justin Jones.
WOVENHAND – TRULY GOLDEN (2006)
Esta música tem uma linda melodia melancólica. David Eugene Edwards é inegavelmente um músico atípico. Mesmo que eu não acredite, eu sou fascinado por este tipo de artistas místicos como Arvo Pärt ou Andrei Tarkovski.
AUCAN – HEARTLESS (2019)
A música eletrónica é também um grande componente da música dos SBR. Esta banda italiana, que originalmente começou por tocar math-rock, conseguiu neste álbum mixar dubstep, electro e rock. Eles têm alguns sons surpreendentes de sintetizador. Esse tipo de abordagem moderna é algo que tentámos incorporar mais no nosso último álbum Pink Obsession, mesmo que já estivesse lá desde o primeiro EP.
EL-P – TOUGHER COLDER KILLER (2012)
Eu sou um grande fã de El-P, especialmente dos seus álbuns a solo, nos quais ele convidou uma gama eclética de artistas como Paul Banks, Trent Reznor ou Cedric e Omar dos The Mars Volta. Os seus instrumentais são tão ricos em termos de melodia e ritmo que podes ouvir e re-ouvir a mesma música e sempre descobres algum elemento novo que não tinhas ouvido antes.

Saigon Blue Rain was formed in September 2012 by Ophelia Lecomte (voice) and Franck Pelliccioli (guitar). Their first self-titled EP was released in 2013. Between 2014 and 2016 they released two albums which gave them the opportunity to perform in famous dark festivals such as Wave Gotik Treffen or NCN Festival. Combining the typical wavey sounds that are reminiscent of the classical new-wave and ethereal wave, this French duo melts its sound with shoegaze or dream pop influences to form a sound image that you can now hear through their third and most recent album, Pink Obsession.
For this the new edition of “7 ao mês” we invited Franck Pellicoli, the guitarist of Saigon Blue Rain (SBR) to select seven names/songs or albums that somehow have influenced him as a musician. His seven choices reveal a little bit more about SBR‘s identity, presenting themselves as an overall intense trip to various musical genres. Enjoy reading and listening to them, below.
“Musical influences are not always the ones you think of consciously. I think most of them are unconscious. Nevertheless, here are some artists that I think have some influences on SBR“.

HTRK – BENDIN (2011)
I used to listen a lot to this Australian band when we began SBR. I liked the cold and claustrophobic atmosphere they manage to create. This song consists of only one part and the loop evolves with just small variation. This song is very hypnotic, it could go on forever like this.
HTRK – RENTBOY (2009)
The same band but with a track from the previous album before their former bass player died. This album is co-produced by Rowland S. Howard (The Birthday Party, Crime and the City Solution…). He plays on several tracks but not on this one. Unlike Bendin, this one is a guitar song, reminiscent of Crime and the City Solution. Except for the vocals, all here is a big influence for early SBR stuff.

Another Australian band. I discovered this song in the movie Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders. It’s composed by Rowland S. Howard. His way of playing is also a big influence. You can hear this kind of languid guitars in several SBR songs.

Ophelia and I are big fans. We love their musical universe, especially the crystalline guitars of Justin Jones.

This one has a beautiful melancholic melody. David Eugene Edwards is undeniably an atypical musician. Even if I’m not a believer, I am fascinated by this kind of mystical artists like Arvo Pärt or Andrei Tarkovski.
AUCAN – HEARTLESS (2019)
Electro is of course also a big component of SBR music. This Italian band, originally playing math-rock, managed on this album to mix dubstep, electro and rock. They have some amazing synth sounds. This kind of modern approach is something we tried to incorporate more on Pink Obsession, even if it was already there since the first EP.
EL-P – TOUGHER COLDER KILLER (2012)
I am a big fan of El-P, especially his solo albums on which he invited an eclectic range of artist like Paul Banks, Trent Reznor or Cedric and Omar from The Mars Volta. His instrumentals are just so rich in terms of melody and rhythm that you can go over and over the same song and always discover some new element that you haven’t heard previously.
