Giek_1 has released Both Ways, the first single from their new album ESCAPE, which will be released on the 1st of May. ESCAPE is a storytelling experience centred on Giek_1‘s spiritual awakening and how it can be aligned with the different stages of a romantic relationship. In Both Ways, the Amsterdam-based artist focuses on a turbulent phase of this relationship, where a reflexive relationship between attraction and rejection ultimately leads to its very end.
The videoclip for Both Ways was conceptualised by Giek_1 and Maurice Cartigny and resorts to a tasteful never-ending palette of colours, sequentially overlaid and exposed on top of intimate shots of a seemingly indecisive Giek_1 – without compromising between attraction and rejection, the blend of tones draws us ever closer to the visual counterpart of Both Ways. The song itself is easily reminiscent of a bastard child of FKA Twigs, Eartheater and Tricky. The overlaid and reverberated voices that dominate much of the sound create a logical and consistent connection with the videoclip – everything is changing but, ultimately, everything also stays the same. While we wait for ESCAPE, Both Ways creates an enticing and addictive appetite for more of Giek_1‘s seamless blend of good, compelling music and hypnotic visuals.
ESCAPE is Giek_1‘s new EPs to be released on the 1st of May, with production by Frenquency. It is the second of a series of 6 EPs about awakening, and its duality, struggle and ascension. Both Ways is one of the 15 videoclips incorporated in that series and you can watch it below.
